Diabetes is one of the world’s leading health problems and has been on the rise in Myanmar. To avoid serious health complications or worse, we recommend this program for anybody who could be at risk.
Our Diabetes Program integrates detailed medical, health and physical therapy assessments with one of partner clinics or hospitals. The main activities and treatment will be at ChivaCare where we provide exercises, education and support. We will help you start a personal journey to implement lifestyle changes and take control of your health. Working with medical and health professionals, you will participate in a program appropriate to your individual condition, whether it is one of general concern or one of high-risk.
If you already have diabetes, we will ask you to provide more medical information and most likely will be able to accommodate you and help you make meaningful and lasting changes.
Our medical and health program can be part of a one-year diabetes prevention program facilitated by our team of health and medical experts onsite when you are in Chiang Mai and remotely via tele-care.
The purpose and guiding principle of the Diabetes Program is that you should remain as functional and independent as possible, within the restraints of your diagnosis and treatment. The integrated program can be aligned with any existing care you receive and medication you might take.
A key success factor is that you want to do it and believe that you can.
How does it work?
We will ask for your medical information and send you a lifestyle and health assessment. Based on this we refine the program and prepare an initial draft. We can also discuss the medical check-up at our partner hospital, but the default check-up program may already cover all your needs. Once you arrive, you will meet with our service, health and medical specialists for check-in, assessments and discussing any questions you may still have. A relaxing or therapeutic massage will always be available depending on your time. We will initiate treatment as soon as practicable and pursue our program of educational components, coaching and exercises.
Our approach focuses on integrating modern medicine with a holistic approach. We firmly believe that we need to focus on both physical and mental well-being. Exercise can be great medicine for your body and mind, but it must be adjusted to your personal needs.
The importance of physical well-being
Exercise is very important, but so are other factors like healthy eating, stress reduction, sleep and stress management. We aim to help you improve your physical well-being, emotional well-being and overall quality of life, promoting healthy behaviors and disease management strategies.
As changes occur in your health status, team members will adapt the program to meet your individual needs (if you choose the optional longer-term add-on program for 3-12 months).
Benefits of exercise:
- Improves blood circulation
- Improves blood glucose control
- Improves insulin sensitivity and lowers medication requirement
- Manages your weight
- Decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease, heart disease and stroke
- Increases energy levels and work capacity
- Reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications
- Reduces stress, anxiety and tension
The importance of healthy eating
Proper nutrition / healthy eating is another critical component and needs to be properly aligned with the exercise regime
- Losing or gaining weight related to diabetes management
- Adjusting food for exercise or sports
- Replacing meals when illness affects the appetite
- Adapting meal plans for special occasions
- Improving familiarity with carbohydrate counting to allow greatest flexibility and enjoyment from eating
- Additional nutrition counseling personalized to suit your goals
In some cases, we can also discuss medications that support a weight loss program (see below).
The importance of lifestyle change and good habits
Research shows a significant connection between an individual’s physical health and emotional well-being, especially for people with weight issues and risk of diabetes. Therefore, a significant amount of time is spent on coaching and education to help you learn to deal with food cravings, work situations and behaviors that stop you achieving your goals. We help you develop a daily and weekly routine so that you stay on track.
Getting fitter and losing weight
Very often, one of the key issues to reducing diabetes risk is to change lifestyle in order to lose weight. This should not be too difficult in young healthy individuals, but it is not that simple for older people, people with pre-diabetes, or people that already have diabetes as they are more likely to have metabolic disorders. They may be insulin resistant and have impaired incretin production leading to food craving; they may have a slow metabolism and easily gain weight.
If you are of young age and have no joint issues, jogging/running or other regular aerobic exercises of your choice together with some dietary change can help you lose weight relatively easily. Diet recommendations may be low carb, ketogenic, require only “clean” food and may use many other weight diet management protocols. Fasting techniques such as intermittent fasting may also be very helpful. Anyone without anatomical issues can do this provided they maintain discipline with their exercise regime and lifestyle changes.
If you are older and already have significant issues with weight, fitness, joint strength or other medical conditions, a phased program will be appropriate. Low impact aerobic exercise like walking/ stationary bike/ bicycle (if comfortable) together with diet control will likely be more suitable as first options to help keep weight down.
For those with diabetes, personalized diabetic medication to better control blood sugar levels and help them lose weight more easily. Together with an increased focus on cardio training, muscle build-up, and a low carb sugar free diet, it is possible to lose a significant amount of weight within a few months.
