The condition causes tenderness, soreness or pain and mild swelling in the lower leg. It is common in athletes, especially runners. There are several causes that can lead to experiencing Shin Splints. The most common cause is weakness and tightness of calf muscles. The pain associated with shin splints results from inordinate amounts of force on the shinbone and on the tissues attaching the shin bone to the surrounding muscles.
